Have no fear, your plastic non-marring pry tool is near. The evaporator core removal is a job that tests both your patience and your ability to begin - and remain - delicate until completion.
Milestones:
-Be aware that the windshield will need to be removed in order to get the HVAC case out of the car.
-The gloss trim on the dash is held on by clips. Hence the need to be delicate.
-The wood trim is held by 8mm bolts that are hidden. A majority can be reached without removing other trims.
-The glove box will come out as an assembly; there is a hidden bolt behind a rectangular velour cover in the box itself.
-The center console will also need to come out. It is comprised of three layers. The first layer is both gloss trim and wood. The second is hard plastic and will slide towards the rear of the car. Try to not to pull up on it, as clips will break.
(simply pull up on the hand-rest for the shifter and under it will reveal a torx bolt which will allow you to remove the shifter easily)
-Audi will sell only the evaporator core as part of the rear case. Be aware that the harness for the blend door actuators will also need to be removed. We numbered the connector with an equally numbered actuator. (Would've hated to end up with heat while cold, and cold while heat by simply over looking connectors.)
-Take note of harness routing when pulling the dash crossmember. It may prevent you from seating the cover when you are reassembling.
Over all, it is a challenging repair but with patience and a well thought out plan it can go smoothly. We verified, - reverified and then reverified some more before fully committing to replacing this evaporator core. Please feel to reach out with any questions.
